Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Once I graduate with a law degree, am I qualified to work as a lawyer?
A: No. If you wish to enter the Scottish legal profession you must first complete the post-graduate Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (the Diploma). This is a one year course and is offered by the University of Glasgow. You can also apply to study for the Diploma at other Scottish universities.
If you wish to become a qualified solicitor you then have to undertake a two-year traineeship with a law firm.
If you would like to go to the Bar (become an Advocate), then you need to pass both Roman Law of Property and Obligations (Undergraduate Level 1) and International Private Law (Undergraduate Level 2). If you have yet to pass these courses (or equivalent) then they can be accommodated within the Diploma timetable at no extra charge. However, taking these courses could result in a heavy workload.
