Biography
I am Head of the School of Social & Environmental Sustainability, as well as being a Professor in Environmental Risk/Community Resilience. I joined the University of Glasgow's School of Social & Environmental Sustainability, Dumfries in February 2018.
Before joining the University of Glasgow, I worked for 13 years at the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) in Bonn, Germany (11 years) and Jakarta, Indonesia (2 years). For over a decade, I was head of the Environmental Vulnerability and Ecosystem Services section of UNU-EHS implementing research focussing on two major themes: the environmental dimension of vulnerability and risk, particularly in coastal and deltaic environments, and the links between human activities, water pollution, and the risks these pose to ecosystems and human health. My research projects were principally in Europe, Central, South and Southeast Asia, and in West Africa. I convened the course on Ecosystems and ecosystem services in the context of disaster risk reduction & climate change adaptation of the joint UNU-EHS/University of Bonn MSc Programme Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security and taught many other courses at UNU-EHS and other venues. For a period of two years (2009-2011) I was Director ad interim of the UNU-EHS.
After completing my PhD and before joining the UN system I was a Research Officer at Cranfield University’s Centre for EcoChemistry in the UK where my research centred on the development, coding and parameterisation of various pesticide fate models, as well as carrying out laboratory and lysimeter experiments to study the interaction between pesticides and soils.
Between my MSc and PhD degrees I worked in Namibia on a rural development project and at the International Board for Soil Research and Management in Thailand on soil erosion problems in the north of the country.
I hold a PhD degree (2000) in Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences from the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, USA) where I specialised in soil physics.
My MSc degree (1992) in Agricultural Engineering is from Cranfield Institute of Technology (now Cranfield University) in the UK and I was awarded a Diplôme d’Études Supérieures des Techniques d’Outre-Mer in Tropical Agro-economy in 1991 from the Institut Supérieur Technique d’Outre-Mer (now École supérieure d'agro-développement international) in France.
Research interests
- Vulnerability and risk assessment of social-ecological systems exposed to natural hazards. I focus primarily on hydro-meteorological hazards.
- Understanding the multiple roles ecosystems play in terms of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, particularly from the perspectives of local communities.
- Resilience of coastal and deltaic social-ecological systems.
- Water pollution and risks to people and ecosystems.
