Research interests

Professor Edgar is interested in how disorders of the central nervous system myelin sheath affect axonal health and, in particular, how the oligodendrocyte exerts axonal protection.

Studies investigating the relationship between oligodendrocyte dysfunction and axonal pathology are undertaken in collaboration with the Nave lab at the Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine, in Göttingen, Germany.

Their findings demonstrate that normal oligodendrocyte function is required for the long-term support of axonal integrity (Glia 57:1815-1824 and EMBO Mol Med 2:42-50).

Although the mechanisms are still not fully understood, their data indicate that the oligodendrocyte modulates fast axonal transport (reviewd in Journal of Neuroscience 29:12776-12786) and a recent study led by the Nave lab raises the possibility that oligodendrocytes support axonal energy requirements (Nature 485Pages: 517–521).

Their findings have implications for understanding axonal degeneration in neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and the leukodystrophies (reviewed in Current Opinion in Neurobiology 19 498-504).
