Research interests
Immune responses can be both protective and pathological. The best response to an infection is one that is strong enough to clear the pathogen, but not so strong that it also damages the host. Our aim is to understand how the balance between these two outcomes is achieved. I am especially interested in the interaction between coincident, opposing cytokines:
- What dictates the appropriate polarisation of an immune response to infection?
- Do these instructions affect bystander cells, not specific for the original pathogen?
- How does cytokine cross-talk affect the immune response during co-infection, when multiple pathogens strike at once? Can the cytokine network be manipulated for therapeutic gain?
