Biography
Dr. Federica Giordani is a post-doctoral researcher at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Integrative Parasitology (WCIP) at the University of Glasgow. After a Master Degree in Biological Sciences obtained at the University of Parma (Italy) in 2005, she worked at the same institution as a research fellow untill 2007, focusing on assessment of the mutagenic risk of environmental matrices (soil, water) and of new anti-cancer and anti-parasitic compounds. She then moved to the University of Glasgow, where she obtained her PhD in 2011, working on new fluorescence-based diagnostics for trypanosomiasis, supervised by Prof. Michael P. Barrett. As a research associate at the WCIP, Dr. Giordani has been working on several projects on drug discovery for human and animal trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis, with the final aim of improving the treatment for these neglected tropical diseases.
Research interests
Drug discovery for parasitic diseases (in particular for trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis) is Dr. Giordani's main research interest. Working together with other academic institutions, non-profit organizations and private industry, she has contributed to several projects on this subject, gathering data on activity, mode of action and mechanism of resistance of new leads, using "omics" techniques and other tools.
Her current project aims at bridging epigenetics, metabolism and cell cycle in pathogenic trypanosomatids, generating data that will potentially be exploited for identifying new drug targets and improving treatment efficacy. Management and control of communicable diseases, as well as their diagnosis, are all related themes of interest.
