Professor Edward Hutchinson

  • Professor of Molecular and Cellular Virology (Virology)

Biography

I started working on the molecular biology of influenza viruses as a graduate student with Paul Digard at the University of Cambridge. In 2009 I moved to the University of Oxford to work on influenza with Ervin Fodor, as a postdoctoral researcher at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology and a Junior Research Fellow at Worcester College (2010-2014), and in 2016 I set up a research group at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research.

Research Interests

I am interested in the factors that make respiratory viruses infectious. I have a particular interest in influenza viruses, which are major pathogens of humans and of domesticated animals.

The ability to infect cells is the most fundamental propoerty of any virus. However, despite their small size influenza viruses are much more complicated than they first appear, and there is a lot about their infectivity that we still do not understand. Their tiny genomes encode a remarkable diversity of gene products. They replicate by taking control of and subverting highly complex cellular processes. And they interact with each other in odd and unexpected ways as they spread within their host.

To understand influenza virus replication, my group uses a range of methods including virology, molecular biology, mass spectrometry, advanced imaging and structural biology. Furter details about our research projects can be found on the Hutchinson group page.

Disclosures

I have received honoraria for work in a steering group of the Centre for Open Science (Open Practices in Influenza Research; 2021-2022) and on an advisory board for Seqirus (2022). I have unpaid positions on the board of the European Scientific Working group on Influenza and other respiratory viruses (ESWI) and as a scientific adviser to PinPoint Medical.
