The Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation is delighted to announce that Professor Andrew Waters has been appointed as our new Institute Director.
A global authority in malaria research, his outputs have included world-leading research observations in tropical medicine and health in an illustrious academic career spanning more than four decades.
Professor Waters’ appointment was effective from 1 February 2022, whereupon he picked up the reins from Interim Director Professor Paul Garside.
Head of the College of MVLS Professor Iain McInnes said: “I am sure everyone will join me in wishing Andy warm congratulations and success.
“I wish to take this opportunity to thank Professor Paul Garside for his significant contribution to the Institute, the College and the University during his period of office as Interim Director and for working closely with Andy to ensure a seamless transition.”
Professor Waters said: "I am excited at this opportunity to guide the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation and look forward to working together to shape our transation to a School, which will be effective from 1 August 2022.
If collectively we are able to integrate the teaching and research of Infection & Immunity and align it with the delivery of practical, clinical and commercial outputs, it should be very rewarding for us all.
"I would like to thank Paul Garside and before him, Gerry Graham, for their great efforts as Interim Heads and custodians of iii.
"They have steadied the ship for nearly 18 months since our former Director Iain McInnes’ appointment as Head of College of MVLS. This would have been a far more daunting challenge without their dedication."
