The Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation has gained the Silver award in the sustainable labs project run by Lab Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) as part of a collaboration with Glasgow University Environmental Sustainability Team (GUEST).
Laboratories are extremely energy intensive and consume huge amounts of materials (using five to 10 times more energy than typical non-lab areas), and a group of universities are working together to pilot a new tool to address this.
A decision was taken to apply the framework on a floor by floor basis, with level 3 of the Sir Graeme Davies Building (SGDB) the first to be assessed, making it the first lab in the University of Glasgow to attain an award.
The assessment revealed that changes implemented on level 3 alone have saved the Institute £5,642 and 86.7 tonnes of CO2 annually, which, if extrapolated across all four levels of the SGDB will be above £15,000 and 300 tonnes of CO2 annually!
Senior technician Jennifer Barrie said: "We are delighted to receive this S-Lab silver award in recognition of the work we have done to introduce recycling and energy saving improvements within the iiis labs.
"We will continue to work toward a greener culture and plan for every level in the SGDB to attain at least a silver accreditation. We are grateful for the help we received from the students at GUEST, especially Ellen Bird.’
