Dr Tansy Hammarton, Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation, hosted a week of parasitology and microbiology workshops for pupils from local primary schools from Tuesday 1 – Friday 4 May.
Over 270 primary six & seven pupils visited the labs in the Boyd Orr Building from St Joseph’s Primary, St Charles Primary, Hyndland Primary and Battlefield Primary.
The workshops aim to inspire pupils by introducing them to science that they may not have come across, such as parasites and other microbes. They also showcase the world-leading research taking place on their doorstep.
The pupils got the opportunity cover a range of topics by rotating around five workstations which focused on malaria, worms; bacteria, viruses and yeast; trypanosomes and leishmania, and jelly cells.
The College-wide collaboration was supported by researchers from the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, the Wellcome Centre for Molecular Parasitology and the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine, as well as a team of technicians and student volunteers from the School of Life Sciences.
The workshops were really well received, with positive feedback from both pupils and teachers:
