Sii's Professor Lilach Sheiner was honoured with the prestigious C.A. Wright Medal by the British Society for Parasitology for her outstanding contributions to the discipline at the joint British-German-Swiss Parasitology Societies Spring Conference on Friday, 14 March 2025.
School of Infection & Immunity Deputy Head of Parasitology Professor Lilach Sheiner has been honoured with the prestigious C.A. Wright Medal by the British Society For Parasitology (BSP).
Named after Charles Atwood Wright, a renowned British parasitologist whose legacy continues to inspire advances in the study of parasitic diseases, the medal is one of the highest honours bestowed by the BSP, recognising exceptional contributions to parasitology.
The medal was presented on Friday, 14 March 2025, at the joint British-German-Swiss Parasitology Societies Spring Conference - a highly-anticipated event bringing together experts and researchers from around the world at the Julius-Maximilians-University in Wurzburg, Germany.
Professor Sheiner's groundbreaking work in parasitology has been pivotal in advancing our understanding of the field, making this recognition a well-deserved tribute to her career.
As well as seminal discoveries on how organellar functions facilitate parasite survival leading to understanding of processes underpinning parasite virulence and their ability to cause disease, her pioneering work has brought astonishing insights into understanding Toxoplasma mitochondrial biology.
Co-Deputy Head of the School of Infection & Immunity Professor Mike Barrett, who nominated Professor Sheiner for the award, said: "Lilach is a global force in Parasitology.
"Her work in Toxoplasma biology is world-leading and she promotes Parasitology with unrivalled vigour, leading a range of innovative research, training and networking activities.
"These push the boundaries of our discipline, keep it relevant and bring it to the attention of aspirational early career scientists, the general public and policy makers.
“Her contributions to the discipline are exemplary and we felt the case for her to receive the Wright medal from the BSP was very strong and well-deserved.”
Professor Sheiner said: “Parasitology research is my passion and so I’m humbled and thrilled to be receiving this award.
"I feel privileged to be able to contribute to our field’s progress and development, and I am committed to continue doing so in the future.
"I thank the British Society for Parasitology and my colleagues in the field for this great honour.”
