The School of Infection & Immunity's Professor Andy Waters has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) lifetime achievement award.

EMBL was set up in 1974 to promote molecular biology across Europe, and to create a centre of excellence for training Europe's leading young molecular biologists.

With 29 member states, the EMBL has more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology at six sites in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, EMBL-EBI Hinxton, and Rome.

Each year, the laboratory hosts its BioMalPar Conference, and it was on day two of this year's 20th anniversary event in Heidelberg, which ran from Tuesday 21 to Thursday 23 May, that former Sii Head of School Professor Waters received the news.

Presented by Julian Rayner, the BioMalPar 2024 committee recognised his “outstanding work, his contribution to the field, and his role as a mentor to many younger scientists”.

Paying tribute on X, the University of Melbourne's Professor Leann Tilley said: "Hearty congratulations to Andrew Waters on his BioMalPar Lifetime Achievement award.

“His contribution to understanding malaria parasite biology and his amazing capacity building in Europe and Africa make him an outstanding recipient.”

Congratulations, Professor Waters!
