PhD studentship on Extended Reality (XR) for alternative understandings of forced migration and difficult heritage of Middle Eastern cultural sites

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a PhD student to work with our partner at the University of Abertay leading the project, the University of Glasgow (Information Studies), and Biome Collective, Dundee on an Applied Research Collaborative Studentship (ARCS), funded by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH) for a full-time period of 3 ½ years (7 years part-time). The successful student will be based at Abertay University and work with Information Studies at the University of Glasgow, with a paid internship at the Biome Collective tailored to the student’s interests.
The supervisors will be Prof. Joseph DeLappe (Games and Tactical Media, Abertay University), Dr Hadi Mehrpouya (Critical Design/Applied Games, Abertay University), and Prof. Maria Economou (Information Studies, University of Glasgow), and Malath Abbas (Creative Producer, Biome Collective).
Entry requirements
A related Masters level qualification is desirable but not essential. We would expect that a successful applicant would have either a First class or upper second-class honours degree in Art, Design or Computer Science or related degree, or relevant masters or relevant professional experience. The ideal candidate will have a specific interest in Middle Eastern and/or cultural heritage studies.
Essential requirements
- First class or upper second-class honours degree in Art, Design or Computer Science or related degree
- Interest or past studies in the Middle East and/or Cultural Heritage
- Interest in XR technologies, computing, interactive design, and/or game design
- Applicants who are non-native speakers of English, the University requires IELTS of 6.5 (with no band less than 6.5) or an equivalent qualification accepted by the Home Office
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
