Reading Museum holds a full size replica of the Bayeux Tapestry embroidered in the nineteenth century. The Tapestry is a key visual record of the Norman Conquest, but there is currently no accessible, modern interactive educational version freely available. With support from UoG’s GKEF funding stream, historians at UoG are collaborating with the Museum, Education Scotland, and Education Evolved to create a proof of concept model of one. The proof of concept will develop four scenes from the Tapestry. Monday 24 March 2025 saw a workshop involving the collaborators and UoG undergraduate and postgraduate students to choose scenes and to determine what what analytical and learning and teaching tools each would require for their constituencies. An early, wireframe, version of the model itself was also demonstrated. Four scenes were chosen, tools determined and the collaborators’ ‘tagging’ requests for the scenes developed. Next step is full development of one full scene for testing by Education Evolved and the UoG historians.

The project aims to provide educators with an innovative teaching tool, increase public engagement with Reading Museum ahead of William the Conqueror’s 2027 anniversary, provide Education Scotland with learning resources, and help Education Evolved develop new digital tools to expand access to cultural heritage, supporting their business growth.
