The Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic (DASG)
The Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic (DASG), which was established in 2006 by Professor Robby Ó Maolalaigh (Celtic & Gaelic) has through peer review been a British Academy recognised project since 2007. This status has recently been renewed for the period 2024–29 as a result of the most recent quinquennial peer review process. Association with the British Academy and its seed funding of a variety of projects has enabled DASG to leverage over £1m external funding in the last 5-year period alone.
Over the next five years renewed funding from the British Academy will enable DASG to undertake a series of new research projects including:
- the digitisation of Gaelic columns from the Highlander newspaper for the years 1874 and 1875 (led by Dr Sheila Kidd and Dr Sìm Innes)
- the digital capture of dialectal and technical vocabulary from early Gaelic periodicals (led by Dr Tòmas MacAilpein and Calum Ross)
- a pilot project with associated website resource based on recently acquired Gaelic materials from the papers of Dr Iain MacAonghuis (1930–2019) (led by Prof. Robby Ó Maolalaigh)
- the digitisation of unpublished Gaelic dialect materials collected by the Rev. Charles M. Robertson (1864–1927) (led by Prof. Robby Ó Maolalaigh in partnership with Dr Jake King of Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba)
The outputs of these projects will greatly enhance a number of projects and online resources, including not least DASG’s Corpas na Gàidhlig (‘The Corpus of Scottish Gaelic’) and the interuniversity project Faclair na Gàidhlig (‘The Historical Dictionary of Scottish Gaelic’) of which Prof. Ó Maolalaigh is Academic Director.
