Geography of the study area

South-western Transylvania was chosen because it was an important area throughout the prehistory of Romania and lay at the heart of both the Iron Age kingdom of Dacia and the subsequent Roman province of the same name.  The survey area covered the hinterland of the provincial capital at Sarmizegetusa and of the Roman legionary base and colony of Apulum (Alba Iulia).  Thus reconnaissance has focused in the middle and upper Mures valley, the major east-west flowing river that runs through the central Transylvanian plateau, the Strei valley, and the plain of Hateg to the south, with more limited coverage of the upland zone in the Orastie Mountains.
