The Viking Age in Scotland: Studies in Scottish Scandinavian Archaeology reviews two decades of research that have taken place since the last archaeological survey of the Vikings in Scotland, published in 1998. Deriving from a research meeting held at the University of Glasgow in December 2018, this compendium of linked papers covers recent research on the Vikings in what is now called Scotland, from their arrival in the latter half of the eighth century onward until the political supremacy of the Scottish kingdom in the 1400s. A thematic approach aids the book’s flow between chapters. Expert authors guide the reader through the latest interdisciplinary research, from arrival and native-Norse interaction to death and burial, via settlement, place-names, environmental impact, power and politics, and economy and exchange. Geographically, the volume focuses on the Northern and Western Isles, as this is where the majority of archaeological investigation has taken place, but there are also key contributions from mainland Scotland, including the Galloway Hoard and Viking-Age burials from the banks of Loch Lomond. Fully illustrated with photographs and maps, this is essential reading for anyone interested in Viking and Norse Scotland. It is also a key resource for students and educators alike, providing a ‘way in’ for new researchers to current and recently-published findings written by the foremost experts in the field.
