Climate change and settlement in southwest Turkey during Late Antiquity

Our next seminar will be given by our very own Dr Matthew Jacobson, whose topic will be Climate change and settlement in southwest Turkey during Late Antiquity. To confidently test hypotheses linking climatic and socio-cultural change, high quality palaeoclimatic, palynological and archaeological evidence is required. In this talk, I present a new speleothem-based palaeoclimate proxy archive and a synthesis of settlement archaeology in southwest Turkey, a region with an abundance of pollen records. Following this, common theories that link climate change to agricultural productivity and settlement “prosperity” during late Antiquity are examined for this sub-region. On this smaller scale, these theories are found to be overly simplistic or false
