Results of a new archaeological survey to the western area of the Uruk region

In 2019 a team form University of Al-Qadisiyah and the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage led by Jaafar Jotheri has carried out an intensive archaeological survey to a large area that was not surveyed by any local or international teams before, located to the west of Uruk. Before starting the fieldwork, remote sensing techniques have been applied to identify the landscape archaeology in the area. The field work has been carried out during October and November 2019 and all the identified landscape features have been groundtruthed. More than 60 archaeological sites have been identified for the first time in this area. Pottery samples have been collected from sites surfaces and processed in the laboratory. A wide range of occupations periods have been found (from Ubaid until New Babylonian).
