Michelle Hay's contribution
The grassroot efforts of 1MWS (one million women in STEM) campaign provides a platform through which young girls can easily access a network of women who have careers in various fields of STEM. This is particularly important for emerging sub-fields such as bioarchaeology whereby it can be hard to find a role-model, and we know that lack of visible role models is a key factor that influences a girls’ choice of career. The 1MWS campaign addresses this by increasing accessibility, promoting diversity, and encouraging girls to pursue careers within the sciences. Michelle Hay, a PhD student in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, agreed to participate as bioarchaeology and archaeological sciences are significant and fast-growing sub-fields of the archaeological discipline. As such it is important that girls can access representation.
