Building the high rises at Sighthill (1968)
This image is from the collection of Prof John R. Hume, an economic and industrial historian of Glasgow. Taken in August 1968, it shows the construction of a high rise at Sighthill in the background. The brick buildings in the foreground are referred to as ‘works’ in Hume’s description. These may well be the St Rollox Railway Works, built in nineteenth century. Remarkably, the high rise flats would be demolished within 50 years of this hopeful phase of construction: renewal can be rapid in urban places.
