Oban is hosting the Royal National Mòd® – Scotland's premier Gaelic cultural festival – for its biggest edition in five years, marking a return to where it first began in 1892.

Around 10,000 competitors, performers and visitors are expected to attend the nine-day celebration of Gaelic language, culture and music, running until October 19.

The University of Glasgow is well represented at this year's event, with Donald MacLean serving as Convener of the Local Organising Committee. Fellow University colleague Alasdair Whyte performed in last Saturday night's Ar Cànan 's Ar Ceòl (Our Language; Our Music) concert, while Claire Frances MacNeil is competing in solo singing competitions.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes marked the opening with a torchlit procession on 11 October through Oban's streets, followed by a performance from Scottish music outfit Mànran at the Corran Halls.

The event also saw the naming of this year's Gaelic Ambassadors – educator Margaret MacIver and the late Gaelic activist Finlay MacLeod, both originally from the Isle of Lewis.

Select events will be livestreamed for global audiences, with highlights broadcast on BBC ALBA.
