Biography

I am an epidemiologist with experience of the design and analysis of observational studies across a variety of settings and disease areas. My recent work focuses on the use of routinely collected health data to generate evidence of drug treatment effects in people underrepresented in or excluded from randomised controlled trials.

I also have experience of leading, designing and delivering MSc and short course teaching related to both epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology.

Research interests

  • Use of RCTs to improve the validity of observational analysis in big data
  • Drug utilisation (interrupted time series) studies
  • Standards for pharmacoepidemiology
  • Respiratory disease
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Post-acute infection syndromes
  • ME/CFS

Supervision

Current PhD/DrPH projects that I supervise are listed below, along with those that I have recently supervised to completion.

Current:

  • Investigating the evidence for pharmacogenomic implementation in the NHS in Scotland (UoG)
  • Emulating randomized trials in observational data to determine ethnic differences in the effects of type 2 diabetes treatments (QMUL)
  • Are women negatively impacted by differences in safety and effectiveness of medicines compared to men? (LSHTM)

 Completed:

  • Real-world effectiveness of oral anticoagulants in the prevention of stroke: emulation and extension of the ARISTOTLE trial using UK EHRs (LSHTM, 2024)
  • Real-world effectiveness and adverse events caused by ACE inhibitors and ARBs for reduction in cardiovascular events with validation against the ONTARGET trial (LSHTM, 2023)
  • Application of methods for handling unmeasured confounding in pharmacoepidemiological studies (LSHTM, 2023)

Teaching

I teach epidemiology on the Masters of Public Health (MPH) at Glasgow, and in an honorary capacity teach pharmacoepidemiology on the LSHTM Professional Certificate in Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance (a course that I have previously co-led). I am also involved in the supervision of PhD and MPH students.
