Biography

Hilary is located in the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit within the Institute of Health & Wellbeing.  Hilary has extensive experience in conducting large complex reviews of questions about the health impacts of social policy interventions such as housing, transport, and welfare.  Hilary leads the synthesis theme (Improving the quality and utility of evidence synthesis)The work of the synthesis theme focusses on ways to improve the reliability and utility of systematic reviews which address public health policy relevant questions.  The theme includes work to improve the transparency of non-statistical methods of synthesis, interpretation of complex reviews, assessing Risk of Bias in Non-Randomised Studies, in addition to a range of systematic reviews.

In addition to evidence synthesis methods, Hilary's work spans a wide range of methodologies including the use of qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate community interventions. Hilary is currently involved in a number of mixed method evaluation projects which are assessing the health impacts of non-health sector interventions, such as the Work Programme, the extension of the M74, and social enterprise initiatives.  Hilary also has a long-standing interest in the health impacts of housing improvement and neighbourhood regeneration, and has led evaluations and a Cochrane review on this topic.  A key component of Hilary’s work has been about promoting utility of evidence.  Hilary has been commissioned by national and international decision making bodies to provide accessible evidence summaries of her work.

Hilary is also a Co-I on the NIHR funded Complex Reviews Support Unit and is co-ordinating editor of Cochrane Public Health, providing a UK base for this group of authors and stakeholders.
