Biography

Anna is a Senior Research Fellow in the Measuring and Analysing Socioeconomic Inequalities in Health programme of the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit and co-leads a workstream on Reducing Health Inequalities. She joined the Unit in September 2017, with a Wellcome Trust University Award to create an 'administrative cohort' to better understand to better understand child health inequalities. In July 2024 she commenced an NIHR Population Health Career Scientist award, which aims to to investigate how child poverty reduction policies can better support child and maternal health and reduce health inequalities. She will be creating an index to better understand the patterning and degree of child poverty across Scotland, evaluating the health impacts of child poverty reduction schemes, including the Scottish Child Payment, and considering how these schemes could be altered to maximise their ability to reduce health inequalities.

Anna has authored commissioned reviews of inequalities in child health, including for WHO Europe, and recently led on a project documenting trends in health inequalities in Scotland over the past twenty years: gla.ac.uk/healthinequalities2022

Anna has degrees in Geography & Population Studies (BSc), Demography & Health (MSc), and Child Public Health (PhD). Between 2004 and 2017 she was based at the UCL Institute of Child Health, where she carried out a range of research relating to child health inequalities, primarily using cohort data (e.g. the Millennium Cohort Study, Growing Up in Australia, the Southampton Women’s Survey) and with a focus on informing policy. She is Co-I of the UKPRP Maternal and Child Health network, MatCHNet and was previously Honorary Treasurer the Society for Social Medicine.
