Stephen is the first person outside North America to be shortlisted and win the award
HEHTA Clinical Lecturer Dr Stephen Knight has won the fifth annual Transplant Visionaries Challenge at the 2025 American Society of Transplantation: Cutting Edge of Transplantation (CEoT) conference in Arizona. Stephen, the first winner and first shortlisted candidate from outside North America, presented his development of a urine test for T-cell mediated rejection. This test provides results within one hour, making it significantly faster than any existing or emerging alternatives. Its rapid turnaround has the potential to improve patient care by enabling earlier detection and intervention.
Stephen attended the conference in his capacity as an NHS clinician and researcher but was also representing the University of Glasgow as a member of HEHTA. The work was a collaboration with colleagues from the University of Edinburgh.
Stephen’s achievement echoes HEHTA's mission of advancing innovative, impactful healthcare research, and how fostering collaboration between academia and clinicians can lead to significant improvements in health outcomes on a global scale.
