Prof Jim Lewsey and Mr Francesco Manca, both from HEHTA research group, together with Rakshita Parab, a 2021/22 MPH student, have published research in the Addiction journal. The paper reports on an evaluation of the effects of the minimum unit pricing (MUP) for alcohol on road traffic accidents in Scotland. The MUP policy was introduced in Scotland in May 2018. The research found no evidence of an association between the introduction of MUP and a reduction in fatal and nighttime road traffic accidents. Francesco was interviewed about the research in an Addiction podcast.
The team are delighted that what started out as a successful MPH project developed into a peer-reviewed article in a journal recognised as one of the most prestigious in the field of addiction and substance misuse policy. After her MPH, Rakshita worked as a Research Officer at Swansea University, and she is now working as a Senior Scientist (Epidemiology) at the UK Health Security Agency in London.
