We are pleased to share with IHW staff and students two talks organised by our colleagues in the School of Veterinary Medicine to mark Black History Month, on the themes of cross-culture communication and anti-racism, and hope that some may be able to attend.
On Tuesday 05 October 2021, Pheona and Michael Matovu from Radiant and Brighter – a community interest company that aims tom to promote diversity through education, inspiration and changing perception – will be giving two talks for the University of Glasgow Black History Month.
This initiative was founded to provide support for migrant communities with the aim of bridging the gap between the needs of the growing BME refugee and migrant communities and existing support provision in Scotland.
Each session will include a 30-minute talk on the topic after which participants will engage in a brief exercise and a question-and-answer session. Participants can join one or both talks.
TALK 1 11.00am to 12.30pm "Cross-culture communication"
We will explore communication traits from different cultures including non-verbal communication, understanding own communication behaviours, how they shape our expectations of each other and their impact on businesses and organisations. Participants will also learn about cultural differences and communication traits within different minority ethnic communities and Scottish society.
TALK 2 2.00 to 3.30pm "An anti-racism talk"
This talk will give participants a better understanding of how to apply and embed anti-racism practice as a core value within the workplace in order to attract and sustain diversity. It will also explore discrimination and racism, inclusive practice, inappropriate and appropriate language, equality and equal opportunities and addressing discrimination in Scotland and the workplace.
