Awards
MVLS Engagement Awards – Shortlist
We are delighted to announce that from an impressive range of nominations, eight projects have been selected for shortlist in our MVLS Engagement Awards 2021. These awards celebrate the diverse public engagement taking place within the college and seek to recognise and reward individuals and teams who successfully engage the public with our world changing research. The Royal Society Awards
Nominations close Friday 25 February 2022. Four of these awards are targeted at public engagement and inclusivity in STEM.
- The David Attenborough Award and Lecture for outstanding public engagement with science.
- The Michael Faraday Prize and Lecture for the scientist or engineer whose expertise in communicating scientific ideas in lay terms is exemplary.
- The Wilkins-Bernal-Medawar Medal and Lecture is given for excellence in the history, philosophy or social impact of science.
- The Royal Society Athena Prize awarded to a team working in a UK academic or research community for significantly contributing to the advancement of diversity and inclusion in STEM.
Funding
SWEA Awards Funding Success
Two MVLS lead projects have been successfully secured funding in the final round of ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Awards.
- Parasite Street Science – Annette MacLeod, Biodiversity Animal Health & Comp Medicine. Total awarded: £71k
Parasite Street Science will tackle the serious issue of broken trust between scientists, health professionals and local communities affected by sleeping sickness in Malawi. Working with local community members, scientists, medical practitioners/ health professionals and theatre practitioners to facilitate multi directional knowledge exchange. - What makes viruses tick? – Benjamin Brennan, CVR Total awarded: £67k
Ticks and the diseases they carry have become an increasing concern in Scotland. By raising awareness and engaging people about ticks and tick-borne diseases the aim is to open dialogue and empower audiences to make informed decisions about safely accessing the outdoors.
MVLS Engagement with Research Fund
The fund is now OPEN. We offer flexible awards (up to £2500) to all MVLS staff and postgraduate research students, in support of research-related public engagement activity and skills development. We are happy to work with researchers to develop engagement applications to this and any fund.

Introduction to Public Engagement with Research – MVLS Moodle
This self-guided training explores how we define public engagement at UofG and why engaging the public is such a vital part of the research process. Suitable for all but of greatest interest to research staff and PGRs.

- Curious About the Human Body
MVLS researchers will be supporting the Glasgow Science Centre’s fourth digital festival – Curious About: The Human Body – launching on 22 February 2022 with "Live" online sessions 9 to 11 March 2022. - Pint of Science – 9 to 11 May 2022
