A team of students and staff from the Institute of Health and Wellbeing and the School of Psychology led by Dr Satu Baylan has won the MVLS 2019 Engagement award for their public engagement activity Connecting through Music. The initiative, delivered as part of science festivals in Glasgow during 2019, focused on the therapeutic use of music in neurological conditions, and involved collaborative working with a dementia music charity Playlist for Life.
In addition to interactive activities designed to engage a range of individuals from children to older adults, visitors were able to contribute to research on music selection and the therapeutic use of music across the life span as part of a Wellcome Trust Vacation Scholarship, awarded to Psychology undergraduate student Šimon Hanzal. The panel of assessors judged the initiative to be ‘an excellent example of integrating public engagement into research and using the resulting interactions to expand ideas and stimulate thinking as to the direction and focus of future research’.
