News
New MVLS Engagement Officer
We are delighted to welcome Suzanne McEndoo as the new MVLS public engagement officer and latest member of the MVLS Engagement Team. Suzanne may be familiar to some through her work with Glasgow Explorathon and Researchers Night. She brings with her a wealth of engagement experience, most recently from her role at Strathclyde University. Contact Suzanne and the team at MVLS-Engage@glasgow.ac.uk
Awards
Three Minute Thesis 2022
Highlighting the exceptional communications talent amongst our PGR community we congratulate all those who participated in this year’s #UofG3MT2022 https://web.yammer.com/main/search/threads?search=%23UofG3MT2022 - the annual academic competition for research students, challenging them to present their research in only three minutes, to a non-specialist audience, with one slide. Special congratulations to:
- People's Choice Award – from MVLS Gabriela Gerganova from ICAMS with To BAM Or Not To BAM?
- Winner: Claire Hammond, College of Arts with her presentation: 'Cocky' the Cockatoo and Displaying the Relics of Empire will now go on to represent UofG at Universitas21 3MT final.
Funding
Glasgow Knowledge Exchange (GKE) Fund and Workshop
The University allocates funding to research staff in support of knowledge exchange activities, including public engagement, through the GKE Fund. For 2022-23, the scheme will offer two streams of funding:
- GKE Small Grants Fund, with awards up to £2,000 - applications accepted at any time and reviewed at the end of the month in which they are submitted
- GKE Flexible Fund, with awards between £2,000-£30,000. Application deadline 11am on Wednesday 1 June 2022.

The MVLS Engagement team are always happy to discuss any public engagement funding applications.
MVLS Engagement with Research Fund
Offering flexible awards (up to £2500) to all MVLS staff and postgraduate research students, in support of research-related public engagement activity and skills development.
We are happy to work with researchers to develop engagement applications to this - and any fund. Applications are welcome at any time when the fund is open and a quick decision period is intended to help applicants take advantage of unexpected, or time limited engagement opportunities.
The Fund is open to applications until 28 June 2022

University staff and students are now welcome to explore EUSEA’s sharing and knowledge platforms, including:- Signing up to the EUSEA newsletter detailing upcoming networking and events, and opportunities to get involved
- Share innovative engagement practice via case studies on the European Science Engagement Platform
- Promote resources/events through EUSEA’s LinkedIn and Twitter presence (@EUSEAevents)

University Experience/ Taster Weeks seeking MVLS presenters for academic sessions
Our Widening Participation (WP) activities are designed to give S4 & S5 pupils an idea of university life and the exciting subjects on offer. The WP team are seeking support to offer life science-based activities on two online programmes. These popular events are for school children considering university and offer an excellent opportunity for you to engage with youngsters as part of a structured and managed event. - University Experience Week – S5 students, 13 to 17 June 2022
Seeking two life science themed sessions - self-led workshop (1hr) for students to complete in their own time prior to the session, plus a follow up live webinar (1hr) on either 14, 15, or 17 June. - Taster Week – S4 students, 6 -10 June 2022
Seeking a live webinar (1hr) on 7, 8, or 10 June providing a broad introduction to an aspect of life sciences.
ARC Launch Festival – Call for Events Information event
The Advanced Research Centre (ARC) Launch programme will run from 16 - 30 September 2022 and will celebrate the public opening of our flagship new building.
We want to bring the ARC to life and create a welcoming, inspiring space for everyone, inside and outside of the University. On Friday 22 April there will be an open call for events and activities that can showcase, celebrate, and engage the public with the fantastic diversity of research and innovation happening in Glasgow today Deadline 31 May 2022. Events from all disciplines are welcome and the ARC Festival Enabling Fund will help support proposals.

We’re delighted that this event series is back with in-person events across Glasgow. Heritage Festival on East Loch Lomond, 1 May
A collaboration between Hushwing heritage rangers and Cashel Forest Trust’s new ranger service in aid of Cashel Forest ranger service. Cashel’s focus is on Scottish native forests, peatlands, ecology and silviculture. They are interested in hearing from groups who might be interested in participating in the day.
