In February 2023, the Scottish Deep End Project published its latest report (Deep End Report 40) on the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on patients and practices in the most socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

This was based on a roundtable discussion held at the end of November 2022 with frontline GPs and key Government, third sector and voluntary groups (listed in the report).

There were concerns about the physical and mental health impacts of fuel poverty, inadequate housing, food insecurity, and access to health and other services due to transport costs. Recommendations were made for general practices and more broadly.

The report attracted radio, newspaper and TV coverage and was shared with Cabinet Secretary Humza Yousaf and subsequently discussed with him by Deep End Chair Dr Carey Lunan in relation to the Scottish Government’s Primary Care Health Inequalities recommendations.

SHW staff David Blane, Ula Chetty and Marianne McCallum were involved in the roundtable discussion and David was a co-author of the report.
