The first results from the CSO-funded CISCO-19 project have been published in Nature Medicine, showing one in eight people hospitalised with COVID-19 to have developed myocarditis, or heart inflammation, assessed by cardiac MRI within two months of hospital discharge.
Wider inflammation and damage to the other organs such as the kidneys was also common.
Patient-reported outcomes relating to exercise capacity and quality of life showed marked impairment at discharge from hospital and remained reduced at the time of MRI.
The study was led by Prof Colin Berry (Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences), and was supported by the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics (Prof Peter Macfarlane, Prof Alex McConnachie, Dr Alasdair McIntosh, and Dr Sarah Weeden).
