We are committed to making SHW a welcoming and inclusive place where all staff and students can thrive and be themselves.

We do not accept behaviour that discriminates against anyone on the basis of their personal characteristics, or that undermines our culture of inclusion.

The SHW community includes people from a range of social, cultural and demographic backgrounds. Such diversity is to be celebrated, and inclusivity towards any one person or group does not mean that others are, or should feel, marginalised.

As Gold Award holders, we are proud to uphold the Athena Swan charter which takes a broad and inclusive view of gender equality work, relating not only to the protected characteristics of sex, gender reassignment and pregnancy and maternity, but also to gender identity, trans and non-binary inclusion and caring responsibilities.

We also fully support the university’s antiracism campaign, and remind all staff to complete the Let’s talk about race in the workplace and Effective Bystander courses on Moodle.

If you experience or witness any behaviour that does not align with these values, please consider whether you can use the effective bystander guidance to challenge this (if it’s safe to do so). You can also speak in confidence to one of our staff:
