Group chairs Susan Browne and Daniel Kopasker outline the purpose of their group, including awareness-raising and myth-busting in relation to promotion and regrading processes.

The Career Progression subgroup exists to support staff through the annual promotion process by providing up to date information and dispelling myths around promotion.

Our annual activities are timed to fit with the promotion application schedule: in October we run a promotion workshop, and in February we distribute an information email to all staff. Our hope is that staff are then able to make informed choices about their career path.

To make sure people are aware of promotion criteria and the application process, we have developed a promotion training Moodle module which is mandatory for line managers but is available to all staff. We also have a promotion "myth-busting" webpage.

Every year we collate and present data on promotion applications from all grades. We provide breakdowns by grade, gender, and whether applicants work full-time or part-time. A particular concern of the group is regrading for professional services staff (PSS) – this year there were no applications for regrading from PSS – we are keen to hear any views and opinions on how we can best support PSS to apply for regrading.
