The Ice Ride: Cycling the Loch Lomond Stadial Glaciation
Published: 6 June 2024
An online interactive map bringing together photography, story-telling and recent research on climate change, glaciology, and geomorphology.
The Ice Ride is a science outreach project led by Charlotte Slaymark.
Around 12,000 years ago a large part of Scotland was covered by an icefield, and in 2023 Charlotte cycled the outline of the ice. The project uses her bikepacking trip and analogue photography to share recent geographical research on climate change, glaciology, and geomorphology with the public via an online map and in person workshops.
The interactive online map presents photographs, stories and geographical descriptions from the cycle trip. The adventure was photographed by Fabián Gallego Pérez using black and white, and colour analogue photography.
The project is inspired by research publications Bickerdike et al., (2018), Bickerdike et al., (2016) and Charlotte’s PhD research on climate and environmental change at the end of the last glacial period.
The project is supported with funding from SAGES and the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences Learning and Teaching Fund.
