Tobias M R Fonte-Boa

I am a PhD candidate in geology supervised by Dr. Tiago A. Novo at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil. I am here at the University of Glasgow as a visiting student to be trained and perform some thermochronological analysis at GLOW under the supervision of Dr Cristina Persano and Dr Mark Wildman.

In my research, I study the Serra da Mantiqueira, a mountain belt that extends more than 800km at the southeast Brazilian coast. This remarkable landscape has had a big impact on Brazilian social-economic history, from the occupation of Brazilian territory by Europeans since the 16th century to the present day, hosting the most important Brazilian urban centers, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and containing diverse and generous mineral deposits. Geologically, this mountain range constitutes part of the western South Atlantic on-shore passive margin.

The studies which are being carried out here at GLOW will play an important role in understanding the southeast Brazilian elevated passive margin which its geomorphological evolution remains controversial.
