Life Sciences
The University of Glasgow Centre for Cell Engineering (CCE), in the Institute of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology, is at the forefront of research for developing novel nano-structured surfaces for stimulating growth of mesenchymal stem cells, which can have a major impact in improving the safe and effective implant of medical devices. ISAAC supports CCE's work by providing comprehensive characterisation and analysis of cellular response. To date, ISAAC has delivered analyses for a variety of medical device companies across a range of applications.
In the ever-expanding life sciences field, ISAAC is playing an increasingly important role, particularly in the support it can offer for the development of medical devices and diagnostics. Among its capabilities, an Environmental SEM allows ISAAC to examine wet samples, which is often critical for studying cellular samples, for example. For medical devices such as hip and knee implants, stents, etc., evaluating the manufacturing process, implant procedures, and possible contamination may be indicative of whether implantation will be successful, as well as the device’s performance and efficacy in situ. ISAAC's industrial customers from the life sciences industry may collaborate on their projeces with the University of Glasgow’s College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) and/or College of Science and Engineering (SE) on their projects.
