What has your career story been since graduating from the University of Glasgow?

After earning my BSc from the University of Glasgow, I pursued an MSc in Petroleum Geoscience for Exploration at the University of Manchester. Driven by a passion for research, I embarked on a PhD journey at Newcastle University, focusing on reservoir properties of shallow to deep-water deposits. Thanks to funding from the NERC CDT, I successfully completed my PhD studies in 2022. Subsequently, I transitioned into the role of Marine Geoscientist at AtkinsRéalis and was really eager to apply my expertise in a professional setting.

What attracted you to the University of Glasgow for your studies?

I chose to pursue my undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow primarily because it offered a specialised BSc program in Earth Science, which aligned perfectly with my academic interests and career aspirations. Among the universities in Glasgow, it stood out as one of the few institutions providing this particular degree, making it an obvious choice for me.

What did you value about your degree?

The decision to pursue my undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow was not only influenced by its offering of an esteemed BSc program in Earth Science but also by the course structure and emphasis on hands-on learning through extensive fieldwork. As a hands-on learner, I greatly valued the practical experience gained through fieldwork, and I found the balance between fieldwork and theoretical learning perfect for me.

What advice would you give to current students in terms of building a successful career?

I found networking during all of my degrees opened up many future opportunities. Attend career fairs, industry events, and networking sessions to expand your network. Networking can open doors to job opportunities, mentorship, and valuable insights into your chosen field. Also, focus on developing transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and critical thinking. These skills are highly valued by employers across various industries and will also open the door to various future career prospects.
