Current Priority Areas

Priority areas

The School of Engineering has a number of priority areas currently and you will find here a brief description of the research areas where we are keen to welcome ambitious academic staff who will complement and strengthen our existing activities.  We welcome applicants with research expertise that complements our strengths in the following research areas and in our world-class facilities: Computational Mechanics in the Glasgow Computational Engineering Centre (GCEC); Advanced Manufacturing; Biomaterials; Modelling & Flight Simulation; National Wind Tunnel; James Watt Nanofabrication Centre (JWNC).

Aerospace Systems

Aerospace ImageThe University of Glasgow has been a home to aerospace research for over 70 years, and today our researchers are tackling the multidisciplinary challenges faced by the aerospace industry in the 21st century to deliver capability and technologies that contribute to the global aims of greener, faster and safer travel. The University’s drive to maintain existing, and develop new, world leading activities is demonstrated by its ongoing commitment to people, facilities and infrastructure. These include: major investments in wind tunnels and shock tubes, covering both subsonic and hypersonic flow regimes. We are a hub in the UK’s National Wind Tunnel Facility and are part of the Vertical-Lift Network Consortium. This long standing activity has culminated in internationally recognised expertise in all areas of Aeronautics, Aerospace Systems and Space technology.

Reflecting our strategy to tackle the global aerospace challenges, The School of Engineering wishes to recruit into one or more of the following key Aerospace research areas: aircraft engine integration concepts; low emissions solutions; advanced design processes; advanced spacecraft propulsion systems; hybrid propulsion and novel aerospace propulsion systems; health management and through-life support; and aircraft of the future – smart, connected and more electric aircraft.

We are also keen to further build our expertise in emerging space technology as part of the international drive for space exploration and development of satelite technology.

Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering

Quantum ImageThe School of Engineering has a world class reputation in nanofabrication, integrated photonics and sensors. Through the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre, our centrepiece nanofabrication facility, we are spearheading UK efforts to deliver the next generation of quantum technologies. The University of Glasgow leads the  QUANTIC Quantum Technology Hub. We are keen to welcome ambitious researchers who will complement and strengthen our existing activities. We encourage applications in the areas of micro- and nanoelectronic devices and systems, device packaging and manufacturing, quantum technologies, digital electronics and systems, theoretical device modelling, green electronics or power electronics.
