Glasgow Engineering Futures Fellowships

Background

The James Watt School of Engineering leads world class research in four themes: 'quantum/nanotechnology', 'healthcare technologies', 'connecting people/communication' and 'net zero'. We are a growing dynamic internationalcentreof excellence for engineering research and teaching. As the School grows, we want to do ensure we do so in an equitable manner.  The School's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group (EDIG), underpinned by Athena SWAN bronze and silver awards, has evidenced the under-representation of women in academic and senior leaderships positions within the School.   A critical point, nationally, for this loss of talent is the transition from postdoctoral researcher to independent academic.

To address this, the Schools EDIG, supported by the University of Glasgow are launching Glasgow Engineering Futures Fellowships a five-year fellowship supporting female early career academics to develop their independent academic careers.

Fellows will be provided with a supportive and collegial environment to build and lead research and innovation with impact, in a strategic priority research theme (JWSE Research Themes), complementing and extending current activities.  Initially research focused, Fellows will be supported ot develop towards a full range of academic activities, including teaching and leadership roles.

We recognise the diverse range of lived experiences that impact early career academics in engineering.  The Glasgow Engineering Futures Fellowships scheme will include a subsequent phase, anticipated August 2025, that will be open to applicants of all sexes and gender identities.
