Research Interests
Soft deformable objects such as droplets, vesicles, and cells show a complex behavior under flow. Understanding the flow behavior is not only an interesting problem of the hydrodynamics of deformable objects with flexible interfaces but important for medical applications.
Fluorescence-activated droplet sorting into multiple outlets
In many widespread diseases such as malaria, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus or sickle cell anemia, the deformability of red blood cells is reduced and can cause blockage of the micro-vascular flow. Moreover, reduced deformability causes increased flow resistance in the blood vessels and is accompanied by hypertension.
Physiologically important effects such as reduction of blood viscosity at high flow velocities by shear thinning are affected by deformation. Deformability of red blood cells is also essential for the cell to maintain its biological function, for example the oxygen uptake in the pulmonary alveoli and regulation of vascular tone.
Sorting of bacteria encapsulated in droplets
We employ magnetic, acoustic and hydrodynamic forces to probe the viscoelastic behavior of biological cells as well as soft polymer and gel particles. To achieve this we use a potpourri of different techniques ranging from magnetic tweezers, micropipet aspiration, AFM, dielectrophoretic and acoustic deformation to microfluidics and optical or electron microscopy.
A main focus of this group are "surface acoustic waves coupled to microfluidics and droplet fluidics."
