Biography

Steven L. Neale is Professor of Micro Engineering and Head of the Systems, Power and Energy Research Division in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. He joined the University of Glasgow in 2009 with a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering after spending two years at UC Berkeley studying Optoelectronic Tweezers with Prof Ming C. Wu. Prior to this Prof Neale had studied at the University of St Andrews taking an MSci in Physics 1998-2002 and PhD in Optically Controlled Microfluidics 2002-2006 under the supervision of Prof Thomas Krauss’s and Prof Kishan Dholakia. Prof Neale is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, FInstP.

Research interests

“Imagine a factory of tomorrow where there are no humans and robots complete all assembly tasks. Now imagine a factory of the far future where there are no robots and instead components are assembled with magical invisible force fields, appearing to float through the air and form complex structures with only touch-free control.” Steven L. Neale.

The robot dominated factory of tomorrow is not far from the factories of today with many manufacturing and assembly task being completed by automated machinery. My work focuses on extending the capabilities of “touch-free” control techniques such as optical, electrical and acoustic tweezers to complete tasks that even the best robots can’t do.

My current research interests lie in two areas: first, the micro-manipulation of particles in suspension for industrial and medical applications and second the development of micro fabricated biomedical devices for medical diagnostics and therapies. Specifically, I have expertise in the micro fabrication of electrodes as impedance-based biosensors and the manipulation of micro particles with optical, electrical and acoustic forces. My most significant contributions to the field have been in the area of extending the range of particles that can be manipulated with optical patterned electrical forces in an Optoelectronic Tweezers (OET) device. This work, which has shown the manipulation of particles from around 1nm to almost 1mm in size, demonstrates the versatility of this “touch free” control mechanism which I intend to keep exploring for utilisation in manufacturing.

Applications - going forward I am interested in exploring the use of micromanipulation to create energy storage devices (super capacitors), developing actuator swarm control stragegies (massivly parallel manipulation) and in translating my work on medical devices from the research lab to clinical use.

PhD projects available, please email me for more details;

Sensors for Smart Implanted Devices – In collaboration with Dr John Mercer in our School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health this project will develop smart implants that have integrated sensors capable of detecting when there is a problem with the device such as a blockage. We create electrical impedance sensors with microfabrication techniques and test their capabilities. The project is suitable for enthusiastic Electrical, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineers and all training on microfabrication and cell handling can be provided.

Micromanipulation, extending the limits – In this project we will study micromanipulation techniques including optical, acoustic and electrical tweezers (based on dielectrophoresis) and research into the current limits and how these can be extended. This will involve establishing current maximum and minimum particle sizes and numbers that can be controlled, studying the forces that can be achieved and the positional accuracy possible. One focus will be on control algorithms for large numbers of particles producing massive swarms of actuators. This project is suitable for either Engineering or Computer Science students.

Additive Manufacturing and “touch-free” particle manipulation – This project will look at combining 3D printing techniques with the “touch-free” control of particles through techniques such as optical or acoustic tweezing to produce new prototyping capabilities. Being able to combine traditional 3D printing with forces from either light or ultrasonic waves will allow us to produce geometries that were not previously possible and also to combine the assembly of small particles such as electronic components with the print too. This project will be suitable for students with interests in manufacturing, 3D printing and prototyping with additive manufacturing.
