Dr Hanaa Abumarshoud

Biography

Dr Hanaa Abumarshoud is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow, UK. Prior to joining the University of Glasgow, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde (2020–2022), and the LiFi Research and Development Centre at the University of Edinburgh (2017–2020). She received both her MSc and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Khalifa University, UAE, in 2013 and 2017, respectively.
 
Dr Abumarshoud's research focuses on the design of intelligent LiFi and optical wireless communication systems, combining information theory, signal processing, and machine learning to address fundamental challenges in next-generation wireless networks. Her vision is to develop energy-efficient, scalable, and cost-effective light-based communication and sensing technologies that enable intelligent, perceptive environments where lighting infrastructure supports both high-speed connectivity and environmental awareness. She leads the EPSRC-funded PerceptiFi project, awarded through the highly competitive New Investigator Award (NIA), securing over £550,000 to pioneer the next generation of intelligent LiFi systems. She established and leads the LIGHTS Lab (Laboratory for Intelligent Guided Hybrid Transmission and Sensing) at the University of Glasgow.
 
Her research excellence has been recognised internationally. She was endorsed as a Global Talent by the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) and has been named among the 100 Brilliant and Inspiring Women in 6G by the Women in 6G community for three consecutive years (2024–2026). She is a Senior Member of the IEEE and currently serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications (2026–present), having previously served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Communications Letters (2022–2024). Dr Abumarshoud plays an active leadership role within the international research community, serving on organising committees for flagship IEEE conferences, chairing technical workshops, and contributing as a reviewer for leading journals and conferences across IEEE, the Royal Society, and Optica. She received the IEEE Communications Society Transmission, Access and Optical Systems (TAOS) Best Paper Award in 2022.
