Abstract

The UK is currently seeing a rapid expansion in the implementation of biomass technologies, driven mainly by the Governmental incentive schemes set up to promote them. Whereas a large proportion of these installations are in the form of domestic and commercial heating systems, and much of the installed capacity is taken up by a few large biomass electricity generating plant and large CHP systems, very few installations have been small scale biomass CHP systems.  Where these small scale bCHP projects (Less than 2MWe) have been developed, only a handful are currently operating. What is the reason for this lack of deliverable success? This seminar will look at the track record of installations across a range of technologies and try to pick out some of the key lessons in the development of bCHP systems.

Biography

David Linsley-Hood - David has been a renewable energy engineer for over 10 years. His initial work was in rural development, providing village electrification schemes in Nepal. From there he went on to be involved with a series of commercial and community scale renewable energy projects across the UK, covering a variety of technologies and scales of installations. For several years, David was also a senior lecturer in Renewable Energy system design for a University of East London MSc programme based at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. He is also currently completing his Professional Doctorate based around the design viability of Small Scale Biomass CHP projects in the UK.David is currently the Technical manager for Buccleuch Bioenergy, leading the design and delivery of medium - large scale biomass and biomass CHP projects across the UK. He is also the technical lead for the renewable energy projects across the Buccleuch Estates.
