3rd April 2017 - Postdoctoral Research Associate, Dr Lourdes Ferre Llin, has won 2nd prize in this year's EPSRC Science Photography competition.
Dr Lourdes Ferre Llin, a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering, has won 2nd prize in the Weird and Wonderful category of this year's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Science Photography competition.
Lourdes' image - "Highland cattle solar cells (Ancient power)" - shows a side view of a group of solar cells. It was taken after a dopant was driven into the cells to form an internal electrical field. The sample was damaged while it was being prepared for inspection, uncovering a cross-section of inverted pyramids with little horns at the top, mimicking the heads of highland cattle.
