Greener Aviation with Advanced Propulsion Systems (GAAPS)
Greener Aviation with Advanced Propulsion Systems (GAAPS) is the latest project of the UK Vertical Lift Network. This 3-year long project builds on existing collaborations within the UKVLN between Manchester and Glasgow Universities and industry (Rolls-Royce, Dowty Propellers, DSTL, HAV, GKN, SIemens, and Leonardo Helicopters forming part of the GAAPS industry board).
GAAPS will be using state of the art numerical modelling and experimentation to look at the fundamental physics of the vortical flow generated by multi-rotor, electric, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The study is to expand the current eVTOL knowledge base, as the aviation industry embarks in very bold, innovative aircraft designs powered by electric motors. The project will make use of the Acre Road Wind Tunnel Complex along with the Helicopter Multi-Block 3 (HMB3) simulation tools of the UK Vertical Lift Network.
