Glasgow College UESTC are delighted to share confirmation of approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education of Glasgow College Hainan, UESTC, a Joint Education Institute (JEI) for the teaching of world-leading Electronics and Electrical Engineering (EEE) programmes.

Glasgow College Hainan, UESTC will maintain the same high standards for which Glasgow College UESTC in Chengdu is known. The same or similar content is to be taught in both venues, including bleeding-edge subjects like Quantum Electronics and Nanotechnology.

Once fully up and running, 300 new students per annum will be welcomed onto a state-of-the-art high-tech campus, with the potential to grow our student community in future years. To ensure a smooth, orderly beginning, a smaller cohort of 120 students are due to start this September. Staff will be recruited (or seconded from current posts) to lead, teach, and support both students and faculty, including a new Executive Dean. Some will be locally based, with others flying in from Scotland or other locations in China.

Skyscrapers in Sanya Bay in Hainan

Certainly, Hainan is the ideal location for future pioneers. Alongside beaches, rainforests and coconut groves, the record-setting launch of 22 commercial satellites using a single Chinese rocket at Wenchang Space Launch Center in late February recently added yet more appeal to China's second largest island - now known as its 'educaton innovation island'.

As Professor Muhammad Imran, Dean of University of Glasgow UESTC, states:

“With Hainan is envisioned as a future world-leading industrial and economic hub, engineers of the future will play a pivotal role in the redevelopment of this region as a beacon of engineering innovation and discovery.  We will build upon our existing award-winning and accredited collaboration with UESTC in Chengdu and explore new ways of further enhancing our joint engineering education in this new location.”

The University of Glasgow joins 2 other UK universities partnering with Chinese counterparts in Hainan to deliver transnational education.
