As new staff join the expanding GC-UESTC team, we are happy to provide them with a chance to introduce themselves to our readers, via a short Q&A. This issue, we welcome Dr. Ahmad Taha, who started in January 2022 as a Lecturer in Autonomous Systems & Connectivity.

Q: Which subjects do you teach?

A: UESTC 2004: Embedded Processors

Q: Which fields of research are you most interested in and why?

A: I am mostly interested in smart energy systems to develop energy-conscious behaviour and contribute to net-zero but also in healthcare technologies. I've always wanted my work to be life-changing and impactful in terms of its contributions to the wider community. So, contributing to the Net-zero carbon target and maintaining a better future is what I am excited to mainly focus on.

Q: What is the most memorable project you have been involved in at GC UESTC or elsewhere and why?

A: I believe all of the projects I was involved in were memorable as I had the privilege of working on amazing projects with many great collaborators from academia, industry, and the governments in the countries I worked in.
The most memorable one was my PhD project which was completed in 2020, in collaboration with an NHS hospital. My project focused on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) to induce energy-reducing behaviour amongst NHS hospital staff. The project being a field study and the impact it had on reducing consumption by 10.5%, in a hospital, is what makes it my most memorable and one that I am particularly proud of.

Q: What attracted you to take on a role at GC UESTC?

A: The opportunity to expand my network and work with colleagues from Glasgow as well as GC UESTC.

Q: What or who inspired you to study engineering?

A: I always looked up to my parents and they were the first to inspire me in pursuing engineering and this career track, as they are both Professors in Engineering.

Q: Tell us a about your hobbies and interests outside of work:

A: I like travelling with my wee drone and taking aerial photos and videos.
