Biography
Utkun was born to a family of teachers. She completed her elementary, middle and secondary school education in TED Zonguldak College, Turkey. After receiving B.S. degree in mathematics at Ankara University (2002), she started as a research assistant in Mugla Sitki Kocman University and received M.S. with non-thesis pedagogical formation degree in Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2003). Utkun completed her graduate studies as a research assistant in Middle East Technical University by receiving M.S. (2007) and Ph.D. (2012) degrees in Secondary Science and Mathematics Education. Later, she was as an assistant professor of mathematics education at MEF University in 2014-2017. During these years, she actively participated in school-university partnerships, and she taught 5th grade mathematics at a disadvantaged public middle school and collaborated with mathematics teachers at public/private middle schools. Prior to the University of Glasgow, Utkun worked at American University of the Middle East, Department of Mathematics in Kuwait (2017-2022), served as a moderator of several courses and participated in committees of learning and curriculum. Utkun received her associate professorship degree at the Head of Interuniversity Council, Ankara, Turkey in 2019. She taught undergraduate courses on both mathematics and mathematics education, in addition to graduate courses on advanced research methods in education. Her research interests are mathematical thinking, knowledge of geometry, test development and adaptation, metacognition and test anxiety. She has a particular interest in structural equation modeling and multilevel modeling. Utkun is currently working as a data analysis advisor in a research project on the effect of math anxiety on middle school students’ problem-solving skills using behavioral and neuroscientific (optical brain imaging) methods. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Council on Measurement in Education and Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. Utkun is fond of books, music and nature and planning to turn her life-abroad memoir with photo illustrations on instagram into a book.
