Accountability regimes have been introduced in education systems at all levels around the world. Much has been written about the unintended and often negative effects of such systems. In this project, we seek to investigate the features of intelligent accountability systems that would improve educational processes and outcomes, whilst avoiding the problems of current accountability systems. An international Symposium was held at the University of Bergen’s SLATE Centre on 14 – 16 December 2018, where participants discussed the effects of accountability in Denmark, England, the Netherlands, Norway, Scotland and Wales as well as in other public sectors. Future work involves the design parameters of intelligent accountability in higher and secondary education.
